But fully understanding these systems isn't critical to enjoying the best of what the game has to offer. There are a bevy of currencies and economic systems that let you buy Cartel Coins, Data Crystals, and Republic Credits, just to name a few. While you are afforded this currency on a regular basis as a subscriber, not having full access to the game's playable races after pledging $15 per month feels a little miserly. Unfortunately, subscribers are barred from seemingly basic level content, such as immediate access to all of the game's playable races, unless they spend a requisite amount of Cartel Coins, the game's microtransaction currency. You also gain unlimited access to all challenges, and regular injections of the game's various currencies. If you decide to pay the $15 per month starting fee (there are also discounts available for long-term sign ups), you gain access to The Old Republic's previous five expansions, including the most recent, sixth expansion: Knights of the Eternal Throne. However, this model affords new players ample time to decide whether or not to fully commit. The free version's biggest restrictions are your inability to equip higher-tier equipment and access some endgame activities, such as Operations and Flashpoints (more on those in a bit). Without paying, you can advance your characters up to level 50, which lets you experience a sizeable chunk of the game.

This liberty, combined with Bioware's wonderfully dynamic dialogue system, thrilling combat, and extremely generous free-to-play model, has produced a truly epic game that shines as one of the genre's defining titles. This gives Bioware the freedom to craft an exciting new story, such as the recently released Knights of the Eternal Throne expansion, set within the established Star Wars universe. Everything in SWTOR feels very different when compared to the established Star Wars universe, but it retains an air of the familiar.
